TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - After cementing its reputation as a critical lifeline during emergencies, Starlink has once again entered the center of a crisis response. On Sunday, the satellite internet company reportedly announced it would provide free internet access to Venezuela through February 3, following recent US airstrikes and the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
According to Fox Business and The Hill, Starlink revealed the one-month free service through a post on X. Elon Musk later quoted the post, writing, “In support of the people of Venezuela.”
While the service is reportedly available for both active and inactive accounts, CNBC noted that Starlink’s official status in Venezuela had previously been listed as “coming soon.” Even so, this move marks another instance of Starlink deploying emergency tools in a country where it has not formally launched, similar to Ukraine in February 2022.
The announcement came just one day after a major US military operation in Venezuela. The strike, centered in Caracas, resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. The pair was quickly taken to New York to face various federal charges.
The legal charges include narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine importation, and weapons-related offenses. US authorities also allege their involvement in drug trafficking and acts of violence aimed at destabilizing the region.
