TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Apple is preparing to introduce three major upgrades to its digital assistant Siri in the upcoming iOS 19 update, set to launch in the fall or the second half of this year.
Under new leadership, the AI technology is expected to evolve significantly after years of criticism for its stagnant functionality.
According to 9to5Mac, three major features will be introduced to Siri in the upcoming iOS 19 update.
The first feature is Personalized Siri Assistance.
As part of the Apple ecosystem, Siri will now be able to access users’ personal data securely while preserving their privacy. This allows Siri to provide more relevant and context-aware support.
Apple shared a few examples to illustrate how this works. When a user says, “Play the podcast Jamie recommended,” Siri will be able to locate and play the episode, even if the recommendation was sent via text or email, no need for the user to remember where the suggestion came from.
In another scenario, if a user asks, “When does Mom’s flight land?” Siri will search for flight details and cross-check them with live tracking data to estimate the arrival time.
The second key feature involves Siri’s enhanced hands-free computing capabilities. Until now, Siri could only handle basic commands like setting reminders or playing music. With iOS 19, Siri will support hundreds of new actions, including cross-app commands.
For example, users will be able to say, “Add this morning’s photos to my Birding notes,” and Siri will complete the task without requiring the user to manually open the Photos or Notes apps.
The third upgrade focuses on onscreen awareness, a feature that allows Siri to better understand and respond to the content currently displayed on the screen. Previously, Siri had limited recognition of on-screen information, such as creating reminders from emails.
With iOS 19, Siri will gain a much deeper understanding of content across various apps. For instance, if someone sends a new address via the Messages app, the user can simply say,
“Add this address to their contact card,” and Siri will act accordingly. This level of contextual interaction is expected to enhance usability on the iPhone and may play an even greater role when implemented on Apple’s Vision Pro headset.
Apple initially previewed some of these features during last year’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), but at that time, Siri was not yet ready for public release. With iOS 19, the company now believes Siri has matured enough to fully support these advanced capabilities.
