TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chair of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Puan Maharani in Indonesia met with Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang to strengthen parliamentary cooperation between the two countries. On the occasion, Puan and Li Qiang discussed current issues regarding the economic-political conditions at the regional and global levels.
Puan stated that the situation in Gaza, Palestine, was one of the topics they touched upon. "Including discussing how to lift the humanitarian blockade in Gaza," said Puan at the Parliament Complex, Jakarta, on Sunday, May 11, 2025.
Puan mentioned that she asked for support from China to urge an end to the Israeli genocide in the Gaza region. "With the existence of a two-state solution," she added.
According to Puan, China welcomed the appeal, stating readiness to collaborate with Indonesia. Through PM Li Qiang, China advocated for a plan to cease the war in Gaza.
In addition, Puan mentioned Li Qiang's visit to the MPR building as a reflection of China's efforts to strengthen relations with the Indonesian people through their representatives in Senayan. Puan also touched on the history of Indonesia-China diplomatic relations since 1950.
Puan also mentioned the 70-year cooperation between Indonesia and China in the Asian-African Conference in Bandung. "At that time, Indonesia and China together aimed to liberate developing countries in Asia-Africa to achieve independence," said the Chairwoman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP).
She then recalled the early days of Indonesia-China relations through the friendship between former President Mao Zedong and former President Soekarno. Puan expressed gratitude that this relationship has continued to the present. "Hopefully, this relationship can become even better, closer, and certainly improve over time for the welfare of the people in both countries."
She believes that maintaining good relations between countries in Asia is solely to maintain stability in the entire region in supporting all situations. Thus, according to Puan, peace always leads to the welfare of the people.
