TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Demonstrators participating in a camp protest are maintaining their presence across from the Pancasila Gate of the House of Representatives (DPR) building in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, April 15, 2025. The "Picnic Against" campaign, which opposes the controversial Indonesian Military or TNI Law, continues despite the arrest of six participants by police the previous night.

Tempo observed at 9:55 AM Jakarta time that two tents have been erected on the sidewalk. Both tents bear a sign stating, "We apologize for the inconvenience, we are repairing democracy." Despite the overcast weather, several demonstrators are seen sitting and conversing outside the tents.

A spokesperson for the campaign, identified only as Al, reported that six participants were arrested on Monday night, April 14, 2025. These individuals, comprising two women and four men, were taken into custody without, Al claims, any formal interrogation or access to legal representation.

Al stated that he was unaware of what happened inside the police car. "Then there, after maybe half an hour to an hour, they were released. Then we regrouped and set up the tents again," Al explained when approached at the protest site.

This is the second attempt to dismantle the camp protest at the parliament building. On Wednesday, April 9, 2025, the Jakarta Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) dispersed a group of citizens who were camping at the entrance of the Parliament building, demanding the repeal of the TNI Law revision. Prior to being dispersed, the demonstrators had maintained their camp in front of the Pancasila Gate for 82 hours.

On Monday morning, April 14, 2025, some participants decided to resume the "Picnic Against" campaign. While their initial intention was to erect the tents directly in front of the DPR's Pancasila Gate, they were compelled to relocate to the sidewalk across the street. The campaign was able to recommence later that afternoon.

Al emphasized the participants' determination to remain at the location until their demands are addressed and met. They are seeking cooperation from security forces. Al indicated that the participants would comply with any regulations imposed by security forces regarding crowd limitations during nighttime hours.

"We will adhere to that, but we want these tents to serve as a symbol of resilience, as a symbol that there are still people fighting against corruption in the government," he stated.

Al also mentioned the absence of any contact from representatives of the House of Representatives. "Whether it's a member of the council or their staff, no one has reached out to us. Whether online or coming directly here, or maybe just stop by to say hello," he said.
