TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The European Union aims to collaborate more closely with Indonesia, said Bernd Lange, Chair of the European Parliament's International Trade Committee (INTA). He cited the current uncertain and geopolitically complex global situation.

"There is a clear desire from all parties to have a closer relationship between Indonesia and the European Union. And, this is based on several common goals that we share," Lange affirmed during a press conference held at the European Union office in Jakarta on Wednesday evening, April 16, 2025.

Lange elaborated that the European Union aims to foster sustainable growth to generate more employment opportunities while safeguarding existing jobs within Indonesia. Furthermore, he mentioned the EU's commitment to preserving forests and stabilizing the global climate in accordance with the Paris Agreement.

"The elements we have presented have many similarities with the views expressed by our partners in Indonesia. It's truly fitting," he remarked.

Lange expressed hope that the cooperation between the European Union and Indonesia will soon materialize through a trade agreement.

Addressing tariff issues, Lange clarified that a comprehensive trade agreement with the European Union encompasses more than just tariff reductions. "I am aware that Indonesia has existing agreements with other nations that focus only on tariff reductions, but our shared common goals need a more comprehensive perspective on our collaboration," he asserted.

Lange also highlighted the ongoing Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA), which has progressed through 19 negotiation rounds over nearly a decade.

Lange expressed optimism that Indonesia and the European Union can reach a satisfactory agreement in the first half of 2025. "So, we hope that once ratified by our respective parliaments, it can be swiftly implemented, as it is deemed crucial for fostering sustainable growth," he concluded.
