TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto intends to meet with United States President Donald Trump to discuss the imposition of a 32 percent import tariff on Indonesian products. However, the exact schedule for this meeting remains unconfirmed.
"There is [a meeting planned], but I cannot confirm when," stated State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi at the Presidential Palace complex in Central Jakarta on Friday, July 11, 2025.
According to the president's spokesperson, Indonesia's economic team, led by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, is currently in the United States. They are engaged in negotiations with the U.S. government to lower the import tariff.
"We hope the United States' policy will be reviewed to benefit trade with Indonesia," he added.
Prasetyo clarified that the imposition of the 32 percent import tariff by the U.S. is unrelated to Indonesia's full membership in BRICS. He explained that the tariff was imposed before Indonesia's full BRICS membership was declared.
"The 32 percent tariff was imposed long before Indonesia was declared a full member of BRICS. I don't think it's related," he asserted.
Tempo's investigation reveals that Indonesia officially became a full member of BRICS on January 6, 2025, an announcement made by then-BRICS chair Brazil. Conversely, Trump announced the increase in import tariffs for several countries, including Indonesia, on April 2, 2025.
Trump officially set a 32 percent import tariff for all Indonesian products entering the U.S., effective August 1, 2025. In a letter dated July 7 to President Prabowo, Trump indicated that the tariff would not be altered, even with ongoing trade negotiations.
Furthermore, Trump threatened an additional 10 percent import tariff on countries that are part of the BRICS economic bloc, labeling them as "anti-American."
