TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - From his residence in London, England, Denny Januar Ali called senior officials and ministers in President Prabowo Subianto's inner circle on Monday, July 27, 2026. The founder of the Lingkaran Survei Indonesia (LSI) was traveling abroad when the results of a poll by Saiful Mujani Research and Consulting (SMRC) were released a day before his conversations with Prabowo's confidants, on Sunday, July 26.
The SMRC survey, conducted in mid-July, showed public approval of President Prabowo had fallen to 51.1 percent. Just eight months earlier, in November 2025, the approval rating of the Gerindra Party General Chair had reached 81.2 percent.
Denny said he advised Prabowo's associates at the Presidential Palace not to dismiss the SMRC findings. Such statistical data, he argued, could shape public perceptions of the government. Public satisfaction with government performance could also carry electoral consequences for Prabowo.
Instead of promising to relay the message to the President, Prabowo's associates urged Denny to speak directly with him. According to Denny, the President's aides told him that he should personally explain to Prabowo how public approval ratings could affect the stability of his administration.
