TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian president Prabowo Subianto invited Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to celebrate their birthdays together at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Thursday evening, October 23, 2025.
Both leaders have October birthdays, with Prabowo on October 17 and Lula da Silva on October 27.
Prabowo explained that the celebration was scheduled for October 23 as it falls roughly midway between their birthdays.
“My birthday is on October 17, and Lula’s is on October 27. We agreed to meet in the middle, on the night of the 23rd,” he said during a joint statement with President Lula da Silva at the palace.
The president noted that the celebration will proceed if approved by Brazil’s First Lady, Janja Lula da Silva.
“If allowed by the First Lady, we will celebrate together later tonight,” he added.
Prabowo reflected on the strong bond he shares with Lula da Silva, describing their meeting as timely and meaningful.
“Perhaps we are destined to work together now, to defend and advance the welfare of our people,” he said.
Prabowo, born on October 17, 1951, is 74 years old, while Lula da Silva, born on October 27, 1945, will turn 80 this year.
The joint celebration comes after the two leaders witnessed the signing of eight cooperation agreements between Indonesia and Brazil.
Among these was a Memorandum of Understanding on energy and mining cooperation between the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of Indonesia and Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy.
President Lula da Silva arrived at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in Jakarta on Wednesday evening, October 22, 2025, at 05:45 PM WIB. The state visit is a reciprocal trip following President Prabowo’s visit to Brasília in July 2025.
According to the Presidential Secretariat, the visit aims to further strengthen strategic cooperation across multiple sectors.
