TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Try Sutrisno, a former Indonesian vice president, was buried at the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery in South Jakarta on Monday, March 2, 2026. President Prabowo Subianto and former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) attended the funeral ceremony of the retired general.

The body of Try, who passed away at the age of 90 at 06:58 AM, was buried around 01:30 PM. The late was previously laid in state at the funeral home on Jalan Purwakarta No. 6, Menteng, Central Jakarta, and received a funeral prayer at the Sunda Kelapa Mosque.

President Prabowo welcomed the arrival of the body at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery and accompanied it to the gravesite. Try Sutrisno's casket was draped in the Indonesian flag. Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) soldiers carried the casket.

Prabowo then initiated the funeral ceremony attended by hundreds of people, including TNI soldiers. The Head of State presided over the ceremony, which began with the reading of a eulogy for the deceased.

"I, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, on behalf of the state, the nation, and the Indonesian National Armed Forces, hereby dedicate to the beloved motherland the soul, body, and services of the late Try Sutrisno, the sixth vice president of the Republic of Indonesia for the 1993-1998 period," said Prabowo. The Head of State also prayed for the deceased to find a place in God's presence.

Try's casket was then lowered into the grave with military honors. TNI soldiers fired a salute as a final tribute to the late vice president.

Prabowo then symbolically started filling the grave. Try's family also joined Prabowo in throwing soil into the late former vice president's final resting place. The process continued with President Prabowo and the late's family laying down flower wreaths.

The sky was overcast as the funeral ceremony for the former president Soeharto's era leader took place. Rain fell several times, soaking the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery during the nearly one-hour ceremony.

Several officials were present at Try Sutrisno's funeral. In addition to Prabowo and SBY, Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto, National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, and Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar were also in attendance.

Try Sutrisno served as Vice President alongside President Soeharto during the 1993-1998 period. The sixth vice president was born in Surabaya, East Java, on November 15, 1935.

According to the TNI Information Center, Try began his military career as a cadet at the Army Engineering Academy (Atekad).

Try was involved in the West Irian Liberation Operation in 1962, where he got to know Soeharto. At the time, Soeharto was appointed by Sukarno as the Commander of the Mandala Command, stationed in Sulawesi.

As summarized from tni.mil.id, in 1974 Try was elected as an aide-de-camp to President Soeharto, which boosted his career. In August 1985, Try was promoted to TNI Lieutenant General and appointed as Vice Chief of Staff of the Army. Try Sutrisno was entrusted with the position of Chief of Staff of the Army in less than a year, in June 1986.

He held the Chief of Staff of the Army position for only about a year and a half because, in early 1988, he was promoted to TNI Commander, replacing General TNI LB. Moerdani.

Subsequently, Try Sutrisno was appointed as the Vice President alongside Soeharto through the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) General Session in 1993.
