TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Presidential Palace expresses condolences for the earthquake that struck Palu, Central Sulawesi, on Tuesday morning, June 16, 2026. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) measured the magnitude of the Palu earthquake at 6.7 on the Richter scale.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported one person died in Sigi Regency as a result of the earthquake.

In response to the Palu earthquake, the State Secretary Minister, Prasetyo Hadi, ensured that the handling of the victims is being done at maximum capacity. "We seek permission to convey our condolences for the earthquake that occurred in Palu yesterday, which claimed one life and left several others hospitalized," Prasetyo stated to the media in Hambalang, Bogor, West Java, on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.

Prasetyo mentioned that the Palace has been in communication with various related agencies, including the Central Sulawesi Provincial Government. "This morning, we have also coordinated with various parties and the Governor of Central Sulawesi (Anwar Hafid) to ensure that all handling can be carried out to the best of our abilities," he said.

In addition to dealing with the victims, Prasetyo warned of the potential for aftershocks. Therefore, the central government has asked local governments to educate the public to increase vigilance.

"This includes continually providing information to the public to remain vigilant in anticipation of aftershocks," said Prasetyo.

A 6.7-magnitude earthquake hit Central Sulawesi on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. The earthquake resulted in one fatality. The earthquake, which was centered 42 kilometers southeast of Palu, was a shallow earthquake caused by the activity of the Sausu Fault, with a strike-slip or normal oblique movement mechanism.

The Head of Data, Information, and Disaster Communication Center at BNPB, Abdul Muhari, stated that this event not only caused casualties but also resulted in 73 minor injuries and three serious injuries. The category of serious injuries includes fractures due to building collapses during the earthquake.

"There are 33 affected villages with a data tally of victims, totaling approximately 1,834 households or 5,784 individuals who felt or were exposed to this earthquake, staying outside or around their respective homes," said Abdul during a virtual press conference on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.

Abdul mentioned that Sigi Regency was the area most significantly affected by the earthquake, and it also recorded casualties. Additionally, the earthquake damaged buildings in Poso, Donggala, and Parigi Moutong Regencies. "For emergency relief posts and intensive handling, we are centralized in Sigi Regency," said Abdul.
