Over 65,000 Gaza Children Facing Death as Israel Tightens Aid Blockade

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Gaza government cautioned on Friday, May 9, that more than 65,000 Palestinian children are at immediate risk from famine as a result of Israel's siege and blockade of vital supplies over the past two months along the Gaza Strip as part of a genocidal campaign in the Palestinian enclave.

"The Israeli occupation is engineering starvation that kills civilians. They continue their systematic crimes against 2.4 million Palestinians by closing crossings and blocking 39,000 aid trucks carrying food, fuel, and medicine, in a blatant violation of international law," the Gaza Media Office said in a statement, as reported by Anadolu.

It was stated that all bakeries have ceased operations for 40 days, leaving civilians without bread. "Over 65,000 children now face starvation deaths from malnutrition as Israel weaponizes hunger against civilians," it added.

The statement noted that Israel's 70-day total closure of the crossings has exacerbated the collapse of the humanitarian and health system in Gaza.

It urged the international community and the UN to immediately intervene to halt the blockade, reopen the crossings, and allow the flow of aid and essential goods into Gaza.

The statement came as UN officials on Friday sharply criticized a recently proposed humanitarian aid plan by Israel for Gaza. They warned that the plan could worsen the suffering of Palestinian civilians and fail to meet basic humanitarian standards.

This is because Israel only allows 65 humanitarian aid trucks per day to enter Gaza, whereas before the genocidal war, as many as 500 aid trucks entered Gaza daily.

Israel has closed the Gaza crossings for food, medical, and humanitarian aid since March 2, worsening the existing humanitarian crisis in the enclave, according to government, human rights, and international reports.

Nearly 52,800 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza in brutal Israeli attacks since October 2023, most of whom are women and children.
