TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ukraine launched one of its largest drone attacks on Russia on Sunday, June 1, 2025, striking five distant air bases within Russian territory.
"The Kyiv regime staged a terror attack with the use of FPV drones on airfields in the Murmansk, Irkutsk, Ivanovo, Ryazan, and Amur Regions. All terror attacks on military airfields in the Ivanovo, Ryazan, and Amur Regions were repelled. No casualties were reported either among servicemen or civilians. Some of those involved in the terror attacks were detained," the Russian Ministry of Defense said in a statement on Sunday, June 1, 2025, as quoted from NDTV.
Russia stated that some of its planes caught fire in the attack. "As a result of the launch of FPV drones from territories in close proximity to military airfields in the Murmansk and Irkutsk Regions, several aircraft caught fire. The fires were extinguished," the statement said.
However, Ukraine claimed that at least 40 planes were damaged. According to Ukraine, the planes included strategic bombers TU-95 and Tu-22 with nuclear capabilities.
Among the attacks was one targeted at a military unit in the village of Sridni, the first attack in Siberia, confirmed by the governor of the Irkutsk region of Russia.
The attacks were aimed at destroying enemy bombers far from the front lines in Russia. As a result of the attacks, fires broke out at the Belaya air base, one of the military installations targeted.
Ukrainian media claimed that the large-scale special operation was carried out by the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU). Soldiers and civilian officials were mobilized to address the threat, and the sources of the drone launches were blocked, according to RT reports.
The attack occurred as Russia and Ukraine were scheduled to begin the second round of peace negotiations in Istanbul on Monday. The Russian delegation, led by Kremlin aide Vladimir Medynsky, had arrived in Turkey.
The operation was launched with the special operation code "Pavutyna" - or "Spider Web." According to the Ukrainian media, Pravda, the operation was aimed at weakening Russia's long-range attack capabilities.
Ukraine reportedly planned the attack for a year. The drones were hidden in moving wooden warehouses, which were placed in cargo trucks. At certain times, the roofs of the trucks would open remotely, giving the drones time to exit and target the selected air bases.
