Observers Speak Out on Indonesia's U-17 World Cup Journey

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian U-17 National Team failed to advance to the knockout stage in the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2025. The Young Garuda, under coach Nova Arianto, finished third in Group H, behind Brazil and Zambia and ahead of Honduras. However, they failed to qualify as one of the top eight third-place teams. Indonesia, with three points from the victory against Honduras in the final group stage match, did not have enough to progress to the Round of 32 from the third-placed route. The team ended up in tenth place, tied with Mexico in points. However, Mexico advanced from this route with a lower goal difference.

In the two previous group matches, Nova's team lost to Zambia 1-3 and Brazil 0-4. Despite bouncing back to secure a 2-1 victory against Honduras, Young Garuda lost out to Mexico due to the latter's better goal difference (-2 compared to Young Garuda's -5).

Football observer Ronny Pangemanan admires Nova's team's journey in the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup. He views Young Garuda's achievement as very prideful. "At least the U-17 national team has made history by winning for the first time in the FIFA U-17 World Cup after defeating Honduras 2-1," he said via messaging application to Tempo on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.

Although the final record is similar to that of the previous FIFA U-17 World Cup, where Indonesia was eliminated in the group stage, this time they recorded their first victory in the tournament. Furthermore, unlike two years ago, the Red and White teams could only compete in this event by qualifying.

Ronny believes that Young Garuda's journey to qualify for and enter the World Cup was not easy. "Qualifying from the preliminary rounds to reach the final round of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar is a source of pride and certainly not easy," said the national football analyst.

Under Nova's leadership, the Indonesian U-17 national team secured a spot in the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar after qualifying for the quarter-finals of the 2025 AFC U-17 Championship last April. At that time, Young Garuda achieved a perfect victory, defeating South Korea 1-0, then winning against Yemen 4-1 and Afghanistan 2-0. However, in the Asian-level championship, Indonesia was stopped in the quarter-finals after a 0-6 loss to North Korea.

"We won three times in the group against South Korea, Yemen, and Afghanistan. It has already been a source of pride for Indonesia up to this point," said Ronny.

The Indonesian U-17 national team earned three points with one victory in the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup. Although both were eliminated in the group stage, the points they earned were higher than when they played as hosts in the same event two years ago. At that time, Bima Sakti's team only managed to collect two points from two draws and one loss.
