TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - General Chair of the Central Board of Muhammadiyah, Haedar Nashir, stated that Muhammadiyah will commemorate the Eid al-Fitr 1 Shawwal 1447 Hijriah on Friday, March 20, 2026. This decision is based on the sighting of the new moon that was adopted by the Tarjih and Tajdid Council of Muhammadiyah.
This is also in line with the Global Unified Hijri Calendar (KHGT) which ensures the beginning of the new month without relying on the physical sighting of the moon, as stipulated in the Muhammadiyah Central Board Decree Number 2/MLM/1.0/E/2025 released since September 22, 2025.
Considering that the night of the takbir falls on Thursday, March 19, 2026, coinciding with the observance of the Holy Day of Nyepi, Haedar delivered a special message to Muhammadiyah residents and Muslims who are in Bali.
"Especially for Muhammadiyah residents and mosque caretakers in Bali, in the spirit of tolerance, we urge them not to perform the takbir procession or use loudspeakers," said Haedar in Yogyakarta on Monday, March 16, 2026.
Haedar urged Muhammadiyah residents to conduct the takbir at their respective homes to maintain harmony amidst diversity.
He also urged the entire extended family and sympathizers of Muhammadiyah, as well as Muslims in general, to perform the Eid al-Fitr prayer in open fields. However, arrangements should be made in mosques or other feasible locations if the situation does not allow otherwise.
In addition to the technical issues surrounding the celebration in Bali, Haedar highlighted the potential differences in the timing of Eid al-Fitr celebrations with the government's version. He asked all parties to prioritize mutual respect and hoped that the public space could be accessed inclusively by all Muslim citizens, regardless of differences in determining the day of the celebration.
"When there are differences in the observance of Eid al-Fitr, we ask for mutual respect, and all public spaces can be used for Eid al-Fitr celebrations, both for Muhammadiyah and other Muslims who have different ways of performing the Eid prayer," said Haedar.
Haedar encouraged the public to view Eid al-Fitr beyond the ceremony of worship and to focus more on the spiritual substance of the religion. According to him, the moment of Eid al-Fitr should be a turning point to strengthen the values of enlightenment in facing various challenges of the times.
"It is precisely in the similarity and differences of this celebration that we make it a moment to explore and implement the sources of religious enlightenment for personal, family, societal, national, and state life," said Haedar.
The government has issued guidelines for the observance of the takbir night if Eid al-Fitr coincides with the Nyepi Day, especially in Bali. The guidelines include allowing Muslims to perform the takbir in the nearest mosque or musalla by walking, without using loudspeakers, firecrackers, or other noisy activities, and using minimum lighting, from 6:00 PM WITA (Central Indonesian Time) to 9:00 PM WITA.
Second, security and order during the takbir night is the responsibility of each mosque or musalla committee, while maintaining coordination with local security authorities.
In addition, the customary village officials, mosque or musalla committees, pecalang, village civilian security personnel, and village/urban authorities are responsible for jointly maintaining peace and order during Nyepi and takbir activities in their respective areas, in coordination with security authorities.
