TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Actor Michael B. Jordan received the Oscar for Best Actor at the 98th Academy Awards held at the Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles, on Sunday, March 15, 2026, local time. This is his first Oscar, achieved for his role in the film Sinners directed by Ryan Coogler.
He began his speech by thanking his family and Ryan Coogler for collaborating with him in the films Sinners, Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. "I feel incredibly honored to call you a collaborator and a friend," he said, as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter. "You've given me the opportunity and the space to be seen, and I really cherish you."
39-year-old actor also expressed gratitude to the two lead actresses in the film Sinners, Wunmi Mosaku and Hailee Steinfeld. "Wunmi, thank you so much for giving Smoke the chance to be himself," Jordan said. "Hailee at home, you know she's getting ready to give birth right now, thank you so much for being half of Stack."
Jordan also mentioned some other Oscar winners he admires, including Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, and Will Smith. He then closed his speech by thanking those who have supported him over the years.
"Thank you to everyone in this room and everyone at home who has supported me throughout my career. I feel it. I know you want me to succeed, and I want to do it because you've believed in me," Jordan expressed, as quoted from People.
In the Best Actor category at the 2026 Oscars, Jordan competed with Timothee Chalamet (Marty Supreme), Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another), Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), and Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent).
The film Sinners received 16 nominations, breaking a record at the 2026 Oscars, and won four awards. The horror-thriller film is set in the 1930s in Mississippi. Jordan played the role of twin brothers Smoke and Stack, who return to their hometown and open a nightclub to confront vampires who have taken over the place.
