TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Meta is set to eliminate approximately 600 positions across its Artificial Intelligence (AI) divisions. This strategic workforce reduction is expected to impact the company's long-standing research unit, Fundamental AI Research (FAIR), as well as its AI product and infrastructure teams. Nevertheless, simultaneously, Meta is actively recruiting for its new, elite superintelligence team, TBD Lab.
Meta spokesperson Ana Brekalo confirmed this layoff news. The decision to cut roles marks a major reversal from last summer, when Meta engaged in a large-scale recruitment drive following an investment of up to US$14.3 billion in Scale AI. Scale AI’s founder and CEO, Alexandr Wang, was also recruited by Meta as part of that process.
That large-scale recruitment was halted months later, coinciding with an announcement of a major reorganization focused on AI-based products and infrastructure. This restructuring occurred amid significant changes in Meta's AI research leadership, notably the departure of Joelle Pineau, FAIR's leader, in early 2025.
"Meta will aim to integrate and scale many of the research ideas and projects from FAIR into the larger model runs conducted by TBD Lab," Wang said in August, as quoted by The Verge on Wednesday, October 22, 2025.
Meta is now reducing the size of FAIR and other divisions specifically to strengthen TBD Lab. In an internal memo obtained by the digital media outlet Axios, Wang indicated that the move is aimed at making the team more efficient. The same report noted that Meta will provide impacted employees with the opportunity to apply for other open positions within the company.
Wang emphasized the goal of streamlining decision-making: "By reducing the size of our team, fewer conversations will be required to make a decision, and each person will be more load-bearing and have more scope and impact."
