TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Puan Maharani, Chairperson of the Central Leadership Council (DPP) of the opposition party PDIP, has announced that Megawati Soekarnoputri and Prabowo Subianto, Chairperson of the ruling party Gerindra, are scheduled to meet in the near future.
The meeting between the PDIP leader and President Prabowo is planned to take place after the Eid al-Fitr holiday in 2025.
“After this Eid, after the Eid holiday, there will be a meeting as soon as possible,” Puan said when met at an open house event hosted by the Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), Ahmad Muzani, at the Widya Chandra Complex in Jakarta on Wednesday, April 2, 2025.
Puan, who is the Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR), stopped short of providing specific details regarding the meeting date between Megawati and Prabowo, only reiterating that it would occur as soon as possible. “As soon as possible,” she repeated.
She explained that the two prominent political figures did not meet during the Eid holiday due to their respective busy schedules. She also noted that Megawati did not host an open house event at her residence on Jalan Teuku Umar, Menteng, Central Jakarta.
Rumors of a planned meeting between Megawati and Prabowo have been circulating for some time. According to a report in the February 2, 2025 edition of Tempo Magazine, the two had previously communicated via a secret teleconference. The virtual meeting reportedly took place in mid-January 2025, around the time of Megawati’s birthday."
Sources familiar with the conversation recounted that Megawati had offered to cook fried rice for Prabowo, a gesture she had also made after his loss in the 2019 presidential election. Following the virtual meeting, Megawati Soekarnoputri entrusted Ahmad Basarah with a massage oil to deliver to Prabowo Subianto. A face-to-face meeting was rumored to take place at the end of January 2025, but the plan did not materialize.
