TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Manchester United has officially appointed Michael Carrick as first-team coach until the end of the 2025/26 season. The announcement was made by the club on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim in early January. "Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Michael Carrick as first-team coach," the club said in a statement on its official website.
Carrick arrived as an interim manager, but was entrusted with leading the team until the end of the season. He is a Manchester United legend. During his playing career, Carrick made 464 appearances and won numerous prestigious titles, including five Premier League titles, one FA Cup, two League Cups, the Champions League, the Europa League, and the FIFA Club World Cup.
After retiring in 2018, Carrick immediately joined the first-team coaching staff. He worked under both Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Following Solskjaer's departure, Carrick was also entrusted with leading the team as an interim manager and was considered a convincing performer during that brief period.
Carrick's experience as a head coach continued when he took charge of Middlesbrough in October 2022, where he spent approximately two and a half years. Now, the former England national team midfielder returns to Old Trafford with the significant responsibility of leading the team for the remainder of the season.
"Leading Manchester United is an honor. I know what it takes to be successful here. My focus now is on helping the players achieve the standards we expect at this extraordinary club," said Carrick, as quoted by Antara.
Carrick also expressed his confidence in the quality of the squad. "I've worked with several of the players before and have closely followed the team's development over the past few years. I have full confidence in their talent, dedication, and ability," he said.
Manchester United's sporting director, Jason Wilcox, welcomed the appointment. According to him, Carrick fully understands the demands and high standards inherent in the club. "Michael is an excellent coach and is ready to lead our talented and determined group of players for the remainder of the season," said Wilcox.
Manchester United also expressed its appreciation to Darren Fletcher, who has led the team over the past week. Fletcher will return to his role as head coach of the U-18 team, focusing on preparing young players to be ready to compete and contribute to the first team.
