TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - K-Pop mogul Park Jin Young, also known by his stage name J.Y. Park, has ventured into the world of politics after being appointed as the co-chair of South Korea's newly formed Presidential Commission on Popular Culture Exchange. The appointment of the founder of JYP Entertainment was announced on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, with the hope of promoting South Korean culture abroad and bringing the values of popular culture into the country.
Park initially expressed doubt about the position and had to think long and hard. He wrote on his Instagram account, "The thought of being involved in government work was a heavy burden." However, as K-Pop is facing a "very special moment," Park Jin Young decided to seize the chance.
Park Jin Young Holds Ministerial-Level Post
As quoted from The Korean Economic Daily, the position is equal to a minister-level government position, which further strengthens the influential and strategic role of K-pop in supporting South Korea's global diplomacy.
The 53-year-old will co-chair the commission with Culture Minister Choi Hwi Young to advance South Korea's pop culture, given that his position is directly under President Lee Jae Myung's command. Kang Hoon Sik, the chief of staff at the presidential office, regards Park as "a symbol of K-pop’s globalization," leading the effort to bring Korean pop music to the United States.
"This appointment is also a response to growing global curiosity about how the Korean government is supporting K-pop, particularly with projects such as KPop Demon Hunters gaining popularity," Kang said.
JYP Entertainment Boss' Career Journey
As quoted from Billboard, J.Y. Park began his music industry career as a solo artist and made his debut in 1994. Last year marked a 30-year music career milestone with a solo concert in Seoul. After founding JYP Entertainment in 1996, he propelled artists such as Wonder Girls, 2PM, TWICE, Day6, Rain, and Stray Kids, while also promoting his company to become one of the most prestigious entertainment agencies in South Korea.
In 2009, he moved to the United States at the peak of Wonder Girls' popularity in the country. He successfully led the group to open for the North American tour of the Jonas Brothers and released the English version of their song "Nobody" in the same year. The single became the first Korean song to enter the Billboard Hot 100, reaching No. 76 and lasting for one week.
