TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jessie Buckley made history at the 98th Academy Awards, becoming the first Irish woman to win the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in Hamnet.
Triumphing in a highly competitive category, Buckley prevailed against fellow nominees including Rose Byrne for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, Kate Hudson for Song Sung Blue, and Renate Reinsve for Sentimental Value.
The Oscar win caps a remarkable awards-season run for Buckley. Prior to the Academy Awards, she collected major honors at the BAFTA Awards, Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes, and the Actor Awards, formerly known as the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
In her acceptance speech, Buckley began by honoring her fellow nominees. “Thank you to the incredible women that I stand beside,” she said. “I am inspired by your art and your heart, and I want to work with every single one of you.”
Buckley also shared a personal moment with the audience, revealing that Ireland had paid for flights so her family could attend the ceremony according to The Guardian. She then thanked her father, crediting him for “teaching us to dream and to never be defined by expectation, but to carry on with your own passion.”
Buckley also took a moment to thank her partner, Fred, during her speech. “I love you, man. You’re the most incredible dad. You’re my best friend, and I want to have 20,000 more babies with you,” she said.
She continued by expressing her love for her daughter. “I love you and I love being your mum, and I can’t wait to discover life beside you,” Buckley added.
Turning to the creative team behind the film, Buckley thanked her director as well as novelist Maggie O’Farrell, whose novel inspired the adaptation. She reflected on portraying her character, saying that exploring “the capacity of a mother’s love” had been the greatest journey of her life.
Buckley concluded her speech by dedicating the award to mothers. Noting that it was Mother’s Day in the UK, she said the honor was for “the beautiful chaos of a mother’s heart.”
“We all come from a lineage of women who continued to create against all odds,” Buckley said. “Thank you for recognizing me in this role. This is the greatest honor. I can’t even believe it.”
