Jakarta Police Detain 69 as Hotel Sultan Eviction Turns Chaotic

3 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, JakartaJakarta police detained dozens of protesters opposing the court-ordered eviction of Hotel Sultan, a landmark hotel complex in Central Jakarta's Senayan area, on Thursday, June 18, after clashes erupted between demonstrators and security personnel during the operation.

Jakarta Metropolitan Police spokesperson Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto said authorities had arrested 69 people in connection with the unrest.

"So far, 69 individuals have been detained, and the number may still increase," Budi told reporters on Thursday.

According to Budi, the detainees allegedly attempted to obstruct the execution of a court order issued by the Central Jakarta District Court to vacate the hotel premises.

"They obstructed the eviction process and resisted officers on duty," he said.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident and are identifying other individuals suspected of involvement in the disturbances. Budi estimated that around 500 protesters had gathered at the site when the clashes broke out.

The eviction operation was disrupted after a group of protesters allegedly threw fist-sized stones at security personnel. Footage from the scene showed police officers taking cover behind armored vehicles as projectiles were hurled toward the security line.

In response, police deployed water cannons to disperse the crowd. Hundreds of protesters then retreated into the hotel complex, while officers entered the area and detained a number of individuals.

Meanwhile, Central Jakarta District Court Clerk Ahyar Patmika said the execution of the court order had met all legal requirements.

"The execution is lawful and can proceed," Ahyar told reporters at the Hotel Sultan complex on Thursday.

He said the ruling authorized court-appointed executors to carry out the evacuation and return control of the property to the parties recognized by the court as entitled to possession.

"The purpose of this execution is to vacate the property and hand it over to the counterclaim plaintiffs in accordance with the court's decision," Ahyar said.
