Israel, US Reach Deal to Relocate 200 Hamas Fighters Trapped in Rafah

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the U.S. envoy Jared Kushner have reached an agreement to relocate around 200 Hamas fighters from Rafah in southern Gaza out of the Palestinian territory, as reported by Israeli media on Tuesday, as cited by Anadolu.

The Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, citing an unnamed Israeli official from the Security Cabinet, stated that an agreement has been reached regarding the Hamas fighters in Rafah.

"A settlement was reached between Netanyahu and Kushner to deport about 200 (Palestinian) fighters trapped in the Rafah tunnels," the official said.

"Under the settlement, Israel must allow their safe transfer out of the Palestinian territories," the official added.

The Israeli official mentioned that no country has agreed to accept them.

No direct comments have been made by the U.S., Israel, or Hamas regarding the report.

Rafah is located to the east of what is known as the "yellow line" controlled by the Israeli military, as stated in the ceasefire agreement that started on October 10. Palestinians are allowed to move on the western side of this line, but Israel continues to shoot Palestinians in that area, resulting in the deaths and injuries of hundreds.

The public broadcaster KAN, citing a source close to Netanyahu, stated that the Israeli Prime Minister denied making any commitment to Washington regarding the relocation of Hamas fighters in Rafah.

On Sunday, Hamas demanded Israel be held accountable for clashes involving its fighters trapped in Rafah.

U.S. Pressure

The United States has pressured Israel to allow safe passage for 100 to 200 Hamas members hiding in tunnel networks on the Yellow Line controlled by Israel in Rafah, southern Gaza, according to a Middle Eastern diplomat speaking to The Times of Israel last Wednesday.

Washington is said to view the effort as a pilot program for a broader initiative of deactivation and amnesty for Hamas fighters, a part of President Donald Trump's 20-point plan to end the Gaza conflict.

Under the proposal, the fighters will surrender their weapons to officials from the U.S.-led Civil-Military Coordination Center in Kiryat Gat. They will then be given a safe passage to a third country or allowed to retreat to the Hamas-controlled area west of the Yellow Line.

The U.S. has been in intensive discussions with Israel and Turkey regarding the initiative, the diplomat stated.

Although Israel has not rejected the proposal, it refused to let all Hamas members go free, citing concerns that some of them are responsible for attacks on Israeli citizens and may need to be detained by the IDF if they do not want to be killed.
