TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran announced on Thursday, March 5, 2026, that 1,230 people had been killed in the US and Israeli strikes across the country since the war broke out last Saturday.
The death toll was announced by Iran's Foundation of Martyrs and Veterans Affairs in a statement on its website as reported by Xinhua.
On Wednesday, the Iranian Ministry of Health said that 6,186 people had been wounded in the strikes.
Hossein Kermanpour, the head of the Ministry's Public Relations and Information Center, said in a post on the X social media platform that 2,054 people were hospitalized, 3,545 were treated and discharged, and 552 received medical care at the scene.
On Saturday, Israel and the United States launched joint attacks on Tehran and several other cities in Iran.
The attacks killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and his family members, high-ranking military commanders, and civilians, according to Iranian officials.
Iran responded with a wave of missile and drone attacks targeting Israeli and US assets across the Middle East.
Israel carried out airstrikes targeting security forces across Iran on the fifth day of the US-Israel attacks. Meanwhile, Iran launched more retaliatory attacks and warned of the destruction of military and economic infrastructure across the Middle East.
On Wednesday, Israeli attacks hit the capital, Tehran, the holy city of Qom, western Iran, and the central Isfahan province, according to the Tasnim news agency. The attacks damaged civilian residences, the source added.
Israel said the attacks targeted buildings belonging to the Basij, the volunteer paramilitary police force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and buildings related to Iran's internal security command.
Mohamed Vall of Al Jazeera said Iranian civilians bore the brunt of the attacks and noted that the country was under fire from all directions.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that damage from the attacks was also seen in two buildings near the Isfahan nuclear complex, but there was no damage to facilities containing nuclear materials and no risk of a radiological release.
The explosions delayed plans for the funeral ceremony of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the country's supreme leader.
The Tasnim news agency quoted an official citing logistical issues for the postponement of the ceremony, which was supposed to start on Wednesday instead and last for several days.
The funeral arrangements are underway and are expected to draw large crowds, triggering the potential threat of US-Israeli attacks on a mass mourning event. Around 10 million people avoided the funeral of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989.
On Saturday morning, Khamenei was killed in the first wave of US and Israeli attacks, which also killed other senior Iranian leaders, including the country's Defense Minister Amir Nasirzadeh.
Tehran retaliated with missile and drone counterattacks against Israel and US military bases across the Gulf region.
While Israel, the US, and Gulf states have managed to intercept most of these missiles, some have targeted military assets and civilian infrastructure. Fragments of intercepted missiles also fell in several civilian areas.
Following Khamenei's death, senior Iranian officials are working to select his successor with potential candidates ranging from hardliners to reformists.
A senior Iranian religious leader, a member of the Guardian Council and Assembly of Experts, Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami, said the country is close to selecting the successor to the late Khamenei.
"The Supreme Leader will be identified at the earliest opportunity. We are near a conclusion; however, the country remains in a state of war," Khatami told state TV.
No official confirmation has been made by local authorities. However, Israeli and Western media outlets have reported that Mojtaba Khamenei, who is also the son of the late Khamenei, is the frontrunner to become the new Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic.
