TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Domestic destinations remain the primary choice for Indonesian tourists this year. Data derived from travel and ticket booking platform tiket.com showed that around 75% of domestic tourists focused their travels on local destinations, with only 6% traveling solely overseas, and another 10% combining both.
These figures reflect a tourism recovery trend that relies more on accessibility and convenience. According to Tifanny Tjiptoning, Chief Strategy Officer of tiket.com, this trend indicates the resilience of the domestic tourism sector amidst various global economic challenges.
"We can see that domestic travel remains sky high," she said during the presentation of the 2025 Tourism Trend & 2026 Outlook in Jakarta on Tuesday, December 16, 2025.
Tifanny added that the domestic travel is manily concentrated on Java Island, with Yogyakarta and Bandung taking the top positions, followed by Jakarta and Surabaya.
"Again, this is in line with the short getaway trend, high land connectivity, and accessibility," Tiffany explained, referring to the popularity of short vacations that do not require long-distance travel.
Outside of Java Island, Bali remains the top favorite destination, despite the shift towards alternative locations such as Lombok and Makassar. Tifanny welcomed this trend as an indication of broader exploration.
Meanwhile, international destinations are dominated by neighboring countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Thailand, and South Korea. These destinations hold their own attraction due to their relatively close proximity, easy access, and cultural familiarity with Indonesian tourists.
Regarding the list of top destinations for the coming year, Bali, Yogyakarta, and Bandung still consistently hold the top positions. But destinations like Labuan Bajo and Raja Ampat are beginning to emerge as new priorities, albeit with smaller portions.
For international destinations, Japan and South Korea continue to dominate the searches, indicating a strong interest in East Asian destinations.
Tifanny concluded that Indonesian tourists tend to start their travels with popular destinations before moving on to explore other destinations. This trend is expected to drive the even development of tourism in various regions, especially outside of Java, while also supporting the local economy's recovery post-pandemic.
The government and tourism industry players are urged to capitalize on this momentum by improving infrastructure and promoting new destinations, so that exploration trends like Lombok, Makassar, Labuan Bajo, and Raja Ampat can develop more rapidly in the coming years.
