TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Consulate General (KJRI) in Chicago are assisting an Indonesian national identified by the initials AWH who was apprehended by the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Thursday, March 27, 2025, in Minnesota.

"The KJRI Chicago has maintained communication with AWH and his American spouse. Throughout the legal process, the individual has been accompanied by legal counsel," said Judha Nugraha, the Director of Indonesian Citizen Protection at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a written statement issued on Tuesday, April 15, 2025.

Judha elaborated that AWH, an Indonesian student pursuing studies in the U.S., underwent a trial on Thursday, April 10, 2025. The court rendered a decision to release AWH on bail.

However, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has lodged an appeal, with the hearing scheduled for Thursday, April 17. AWH is currently being held at Kandiyohi County Jail in Marshall, Minnesota.

In 2022, Judha disclosed that AWH had been formally charged with a fourth-degree offense stemming from his participation in a Black Lives Matter demonstration. This demonstration was related to the death of George Floyd while in the custody of U.S. law enforcement.

Judha underscored the Indonesian government's commitment to safeguard its citizens. "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the KJRI Chicago will continue to provide legal assistance to ensure the comprehensive protection of AWH's rights throughout the legal process in the United States," he affirmed.

In a related incident, the U.S. federal immigration authorities detained another Indonesian student in Minnesota within the confines of a hospital shortly after the revocation of his student visa.

As reported by Newsweek on Monday, Aditya Harsono, a resident of Marshall employed as a hospital supply chain manager, was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on March 27.

"What is particularly troubling about the circumstances surrounding Mr. Harsono's arrest is that his employers, who held him in such high regard, were essentially coerced into staging a meeting in the hospital basement solely to facilitate ICE's apprehension of him," revealed the family's legal representative, Sarah Gad, to Newsweek.

Since the commencement of Trump's second term, numerous migrants have been arrested. Under the Trump administration, ICE has been granted expanded enforcement powers, encompassing the authority to conduct operations in hospitals and other sensitive locations.
