Indonesia Will Continue Investment, Import Push Despite 32% US Tariff

3 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government is offering investment cooperation and increased imports as part of its negotiation strategy with the United States.

Spokesperson for the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Haryo Limanseto, said the offer will remain in place even though the US has announced new import tariffs set to take effect on August 1, 2025.

According to Haryo, the proposal to invest and import goods will still apply even if the US imposes a 32 percent tariff.

"If the transaction is mutually beneficial, whether government-to-government or business-to-business, then it is appropriate for us to continue," Haryo said at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs office on Lapangan Banteng Street, Jakarta, on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.

Previously, the government revealed that the total value of investment and imports offered by Indonesia to the US reached US$34 billion, or around Rp552.6 trillion based on an exchange rate of Rp16,254 per US dollar. The offer is intended to help address the trade imbalance previously raised by the US.

Indonesia is negotiating with the US government through two main channels: government-to-government (G2G) and business-to-business (B2B). The B2B approach involves cooperation between Indonesian companies and American businesses, including increased purchase agreements.

Haryo added that several Indonesian firms have already signed memorandums of understanding with US companies. The continuation of these partnerships will depend on the companies involved, while the government will support them as long as they are beneficial to both countries.

The government also hopes the negotiations will lead to more business transactions. However, Haryo emphasized that Indonesia will still aim to maintain trade balance. "We should not end up with a deficit either," he said.

Currently, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto is in Washington, DC, lobbying the US to lower the proposed tariffs.

He arrived on July 8, 2025, after attending the BRICS Summit in Brazil alongside President Prabowo Subianto. Airlangga is scheduled to meet with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Howard Lutnick.
