Indonesia's Ujung Kulon National Park Flags 3 New Javan Rhino Calves

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Ujung Kulon National Park has identified three new Javan rhinos (Rhinoceros sondaicus) through footprints and camera traps. The Director General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (KSDAE) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Satyawan Pudyatmoko, said the discovery of rhino calves was aided through the implementation of a “fully protected area system,” which includes closing the Ujung Kulon peninsula from human activities.

“A consistent conservation is key to saving Javan rhinos from extinction threats,” said Satyawan in a written statement on Saturday, May 3, 2025.

The first rhino calf was identified through a camera trap by an inspection team on March 30, 2025, in the southern part of the Ujung Kulon peninsula. In the footage, a female Javan rhino calf, estimated to be about 2 years old, was seen with its mother. The calf’s posture was almost identical to the mother's. The female calf is over 2 years old.

The second calf was found in the same location on April 3, 2025. The camera recorded a male Javan rhino estimated to be no more than 3 years old. The small rhinoceros horn has appeared, but its physical condition is still being studied by the team.

The footprint of the third rhino was found on April 20 in an area that is one of the largest rhinoceros concentration zones to the south of the Ujung Kulon peninsula. The size of the footprint is 19-20 centimeters. Its age is estimated to be between 4-6 months.

According to Satyawan, the discovery of the rhinos shows the effectiveness of the 'Spatially Explicit Model' system, where cameras are systematically installed in 35 clusters. There are 4 camera traps in each cluster, making it more potential to capture the latest footprints.

The Javan rhino is a rare protected species in Indonesia based on Ministerial Regulation No. P.106/MENLHK/SETJEN/KUM.1/12/2018. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has categorized the rhinos as “critically endangered,” with a high risk of extinction.
