TEMPO.COJakarta - The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) has officially cut off access to the Zangi application and its associated site. The action was taken because Zangi is not registered as a Private Electronic System Provider (PSE Private) in Indonesia.

"This step is part of the enforcement of applicable regulations," stated the Director General of Digital Space Supervision at Komdigi, Alexander Sabar, in a written statement on Tuesday, October 21, 2025.

Alexander emphasized that all messaging applications and sites operating in the country are required to comply with the government's registration provisions. He urged all managers and developers of digital platforms circulating in Indonesia to comply with existing regulations. "This is important to ensure protection for digital service users in Indonesia," he said.

The termination of access aligns with the Minister of Communication and Information Technology Regulation Number 5 of 2020 concerning Private Electronic System Providers, which mandates that every Private PSE offering services in Indonesia must be registered and possess an Electronic System Provider Registration Certificate (TDPSE). Under these provisions, Private PSEs failing to fulfill these obligations may face administrative sanctions, including the termination of access to their services.

According to Alex, the decision to block Zangi is not an isolated action. He described the move as a demonstration of the government's commitment to protecting the governance and sustainability of the national digital space, ensuring it remains secure and trustworthy for all users.

"The government opens space for all providers to comply with registration requirements. With such compliance, the Indonesian digital ecosystem will be healthier and more competitive," Alexander concluded.

What Is Zangi App?

Citing its official website, Zangi is a personal messaging application headquartered in Silicon Valley, California, United States. The company claims to drive innovation in personal communication solutions with high security standards.

Zangi operates two main business lines: Zangi Free Messenger and Zangi Business Solutions. The company distinguishes itself by stating that Zangi Messenger does not store or provide senders' personal information or messages to anyone. Zangi claims to have refused to collect or access user data from the outset, thereby eliminating the possibility of monitoring, infiltration, or backdoors leading to personal data breaches.

Zangi utilizes military-grade encryption for its entire scheme, ensuring the full confidentiality and authenticity of calls and messages, even across vulnerable or hostile networks. The application is also ad-free and does not require a subscription fee.
