TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Former Vice President and National Armed Forces (TNI) General (ret.) Try Sutrisno passed away on Monday, March 2, 2026, at the age of 90. Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi confirmed the sad news. "Yes, we are deeply saddened," Prasetyo said on Monday, as quoted by Kumparan.
The late Try Sutrisno breathed his last at the Gatot Soebroto Army Central Hospital (RSPAD) in Jakarta at around 6:58 a.m. Western Indonesian Time. Try Sutrisno's body is scheduled to be washed at RSPAD and then taken to the funeral home on Jalan Purwakarta No. 6, Menteng, Central Jakarta.
Try Sutrisno was the Vice President who accompanied President Soeharto during his presidency from 1993 to 1998. The sixth Vice President was born in Surabaya, East Java, on November 15, 1935.
According to the TNI Information Center, Try began his military career as a cadet at the Army Engineering Academy (Atekad).
Try was involved in the West Irian Liberation Operation in 1962, which led to his acquaintance with Suharto. At that time, Suharto was appointed by Sukarno as Commander of the Mandala Command stationed in Sulawesi.
According to tni.mil.id, in 1974, Try was selected as President Suharto's aide, which catapulted his career skyrocketing. In August 1985, Try was promoted to Lieutenant General and appointed Deputy Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Army. Less than a year later, in June 1986, Try Sutrisno was appointed Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Army.
He served as Army Chief of Staff for only about a year and a half, as in early 1988 he was promoted to Commander of the Indonesian Armed Forces, replacing General LB Moerdani.
Try Sutrisno was then appointed Vice President alongside Suharto by the 1993 General Session of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR).
