TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia has postponed the D-8 Summit, a cooperation forum of eight developing countries, until further notice due to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

The D-8, formed in 1997, includes Bangladesh, Egypt, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Turkey, and Indonesia. The organization focuses on enhancing economic cooperation, trade, and development to promote inclusive and sustainable growth.

Postponement Due to Geopolitical Tensions

Director General of Multilateral Cooperation at Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tri Tharyat, said the decision was necessary given the current volatility in the Middle East.

“Last night, the Minister of Foreign Affairs signed a letter to his counterparts announcing the postponement of the D-8 Summit and all related activities,” Tri said during a press briefing at the Ministry, which was also streamed on YouTube on Friday, March 13, 2026.

Tri added that all member countries have been informed of the postponement and understand Indonesia’s decision. A new date for the summit will be discussed once the geopolitical situation stabilizes.

“Setting a new date will be discussed at the appropriate time. For now, the situation in the Middle East is still evolving,” he said.

Planned Agenda and Goals

Indonesia had been scheduled to host and lead the summit on April 15, 2026. Foreign Minister Sugiono said the forum would focus on concrete economic cooperation and initiatives with tangible benefits for all member states.

The summit was also set to discuss the Israel-Palestine conflict, including the Two-State Solution. Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir said Indonesia would review recent developments and explore potential steps in line with agreements reached by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

“Ultimately, it’s about the Two-State Solution,” Arrmanatha said at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta on Monday, February 9, 2026, as cited by Antara.

The D-8 Summit provides a platform for member countries to strengthen collaboration on trade, investment, and sustainable development while addressing regional and global challenges.
