TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Palestinian group Hamas is urging its ally, Iran, to cease attacks on Gulf nations. However, Hamas asserts that Tehran has the right to defend itself against Israel and the United States.
On Saturday, March 14, 2026, Hamas called on its brothers in Iran not to target neighboring countries. Hamas insists that the ongoing conflict, which has ravaged much of the Middle East, be halted immediately.
Hamas is battling the Israeli genocide in Gaza following the attack on October 7, 2023. While Israel has devastated the besieged and bombarded area to the ground, the Israeli onslaught has claimed the lives of over 72,000 people. Gulf nations, especially Qatar, have intervened through mediation, diplomacy, and aid.
Since the start of the Iran war by the US and Israel on February 28, 2026, several Gulf countries in the region have reported missile and drone attacks by Iran. "While affirming the right of the Islamic Republic of Iran to respond to this aggression by all available means in accordance with international norms and laws, the movement calls on the brothers in Iran to avoid targeting neighbouring countries," Hamas stated in a release quoted from Al Jazeera.
Hamas also added that the countries in the region must work together to halt this aggression and maintain the bond of brotherhood among them.
Iran has provided Hamas with financial and military support for decades, making the group part of what is known as the "axis of resistance," which is now much weaker. The axis of resistance also includes Lebanon's Hezbollah and Yemen's Houthis.
Last month, Gulf nations pledged over US$4 billion in combined financial support to the Board of Peace formed by US President Donald Trump. This assistance serves as a signal of financial support aimed at resolving the Israel-Palestine conflict.
These promises were announced during the first meeting of the Board of Peace, which had been suspended after the war, in Washington, where Qatar and Saudi Arabia committed to providing US$1 billion each. Kuwait also pledged US$1 billion over the coming years, while the United Arab Emirates announced an additional US$1.2 billion in support for Gaza through the Board of Peace.
Throughout the genocide war in Gaza, Qatar has also played a key role as a mediator, alongside the US and Egypt.
A "ceasefire" agreement backed by the US has been in place in Gaza since October 2025, intended to halt Israeli attacks for two years. The war has claimed the lives of over 72,000 people and injured more than 171,000 people since October 2023.
