GTA VI Reportedly Rakes in US$1 Billion in First Hour of Pre-Orders

5 hours ago 23

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The game Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI) is claimed to have raked in up to US$1 billion or nearly Rp18 trillion in just the first hour after the pre-order went live. These figures are still estimates and have not been officially confirmed by the developer Rockstar Games or its parent company, Take-Two Interactive.

The report mentions that the estimate is based on market movements at the beginning of the pre-order opening. If true, GTA VI's revenue is estimated to have surpassed the revenue of this year's highest-grossing film, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Researcher and professor at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business, Anthony Palomba, stated that the opening of pre-orders also drove up Take-Two's stock prices. "Take-Two shares rose almost 3% in early trading when pre-orders opened, and some analysts modeled as much as $1 billion in revenue in the first hour alone," he said as quoted from Collider's report on July 1, 2026.

The estimate also indicates the high level of enthusiasm for GTA 6 compared to its predecessors. Grand Theft Auto V took about three days after its launch in 2013 to reach sales worth US$1 billion.

The game, scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, is marketed at a higher price, namely US$79.99 for the standard edition and US$99.99 for the Ultimate Edition. However, achieving such revenue only from pre-orders is still considered very significant.

The same report also mentioned that the number of pre-orders is estimated to have exceeded 39 million copies. However, Take-Two has not released official data, so these figures have not been independently verified.

In GTA VI, Rockstar brings players back to Vice City and the fictional state of Leonida, inspired by Miami and Florida. This game follows the story of Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, a criminal couple portrayed as a new-generation Bonnie and Clyde.
