TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin has invited Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates to join the advisory board of Daya Anagata Nusantara (Danantara), Indonesia’s Investment Management Authority.
Budi extended the invitation during a meeting between President Prabowo Subianto and Gates, attended by cabinet ministers and local business leaders.
"I hope Mr. Bill can join the board alongside Mr. Ray Dalio, your friend, as both of you also sit on the board of an education philanthropy institution in China," Budi said, as quoted from the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.
He noted that Indonesia has the potential to receive up to US$30 billion in philanthropic funds annually, but much of it currently flows through other countries due to a lack of a trusted institution.
Budi hopes Gates' involvement will boost confidence in Danantara and help channel more funds directly into the country.
"You can also contribute. Mr. Gates has systematic management expertise that can help build public trust, encouraging them to donate," Budi added.
At the same event, the Minister of Downstream and Investment and CEO of Danantara Indonesia, Rosan Roeslani, invited Bill Gates' foundation named The Gates Foundation to put funds in the Danantara Trust Fund.
"I also spoke with the Gates Foundation team yesterday morning about the potential for collaboration with Danantara," said Rosan after accompanying President Prabowo Subianto receiving Bill Gates at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.
Rosan also stated that the Danantara Trust Fund will allocate 1 to 2.5 percent of the total dividends received each year. According to his calculations, Danantara will first put in US$100 million and in 5-6 years will put in US$1 billion to the Danantara Trust Fund.
“This US$1 billion will be directed toward education, sanitation, and efforts aimed at improving the quality of life for Indonesians, particularly those in need,” Rosan said.
