Pakistan Says 31 Killed in Indian Military Strikes

5 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Pakistani military has announced that at least 31 people were killed following India's missile strikes into its territory. The casualties also resulted from cross-border shootings along the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border between the two countries.

Meanwhile, the number of injured has risen from 46 to 57, said military spokesperson Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry in a press conference cited by Anadolu.

India announced "Operation Sindoor" on Tuesday night. According to India, the operation was to target terrorist infrastructure at nine locations in Pakistan.

The escalation between the two nuclear-armed neighboring countries happened after the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, the tourist town in Indian-administered Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 26 people.

India blamed Pakistan for the attack. India claimed there were cross-border links, which Pakistan denied. Pakistan also called for a neutral investigation. India stated that New Delhi was using its right to repel cross-border attacks.

Meanwhile, Pakistan stated that it had shot down five Indian fighter jets. Pakistan declared that it had the right to respond to the attack.

India has not yet issued an official response to Pakistan's statement about the downing of its aircraft.

Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif stated that they were conducting an independent investigation into allegations of the existence of terrorist camps in its territory as claimed by India. "We are ready for an independent investigation into this matter as well along with the Pahalgam incident. We appeal to the international community to investigate into the (reality of) 'so-called terrorist camps' (targeted by India)," Asif said in an interview with local broadcaster Geo News on Wednesday night.

However, Pakistan also has the right to respond to India's military attack. "Unlike India, we will never target the civilians," Asif said.

Reported by Al Jazeera, the attack has led to the suspension of flights at Karachi, Lahore, and Sialkot airports in Pakistan.

Pakistan also shot down an Indian spy drone. The unmanned aircraft was shot down near Walton Road in the city.
