TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Several international media outlets are covering the looting at the home of Indonesian Finance Minister Sri Mulyani and members of the House of Representatives (DPR). The incident occurred amid ongoing protests in Indonesia, which began last week following the death of Affan Kurniawan, a 21-year-old online motorcycle taxi (ojol) driver. The wave of protests spread to the looting at Finance Minister Sri Mulyani's house in Bintaro, South Tangerang. In addition to Sri Mulyani, the residences of several members of the DPR, such as Ahmad Sahroni, Uya Kuya, Eko Patrio, and Nafa Urbach, were not spared from the lootings.

In an article titled Deadly Indonesia Protests Force U-turn on Lawmakers' Perks, Reuters wrote that the protests led to the looting of the homes of political party members and public facilities being set on fire. "Homes of political party members and state buildings were ransacked or set ablaze, shaking investor confidence in the Southeast Asian economy and triggering a steep selloff on its stocks and currency markets on Friday," Reuters wrote on Monday, September 1, 2025.

"Protests began on Monday over what demonstrators called excessive pay and housing allowances for parliamentarians. President Prabowo Subianto stated on Sunday, August 31, 2025, that Leaders in parliament have conveyed that they will revoke a number of parliament policies," according to Reuters.

Japanese media, The Japan Times, also reported on the robberies at the homes of politicians and the finance minister. "Homes of political party members and state buildings were ransacked or set ablaze, shaking investor confidence in the Southeast Asian economy and triggering a steep selloff on its stocks and currency markets on Friday. Looters broke into a house owned by Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati outside the capital Jakarta overnight. She was not in the house at the time, and it was not clear if she uses the property often," wrote Japan Times.

Singaporean media, CNA, in its article titled Thousands Protest in Indonesia as Military Deployed in Capital, also highlighted the looting at Sri Mulyani's house. CNA quoted a post from the finance minister on Instagram. "Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati confirmed in an Instagram post that she was a victim of the looters. She called on people not to loot, and apologised for the government's shortcomings," wrote CNA.

The masses stormed the homes of Ahmad Sahroni, Uya Kuya, Eko Patrio, Nafa Urbach, and Sri Mulyani. They looted valuable items ranging from bags to luxury watches at Sahroni's house. Meanwhile, at Sri Mulyani's house, the looting occurred in two waves.

Following the incident, through her Instagram account, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati urged everyone not to tire of loving Indonesia. She also called for democracy to be done without anarchy, intimidation, and repression. Sri Mulyani said the struggle to build Indonesia is a tough and often dangerous process. "Our predecessors have been through it," she said in a social media post on Instagram, Monday, September 1, 2025.
