TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The human toll from floods and landslides across Indonesia's Sumatra continues to climb. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) released updated figures on Monday, December 1, 2025, reporting a total of 604 fatalities across three provinces: 283 in North Sumatra, 165 in West Sumatra, and 151 in Aceh.
In addition, 464 people remain missing, around 2,600 have been injured, and 1.5 million residents have been affected. More than 570,700 people have been displaced by the disaster.
BNPB reported that 50 regencies were impacted, including 3,500 houses heavily damaged, 4,100 moderately damaged, and 20,500 lightly damaged. Infrastructure damage includes 282 educational facilities and 271 bridges.
The death toll has increased by 50 percent from the previous day. On Sunday, November 30, 2025, BNPB head Lieutenant General TNI Suharyanto reported 442 deaths and 402 missing persons.
“The joint team from BNPB, TNI/Polri, Basarnas, ministries, and local governments continues to accelerate search and rescue operations, provide aid, and restore access to affected areas,” Suharyanto said during a press conference at the National Support Post at Silangit Airport, Tapanuli Utara, North Sumatra.
Regional Breakdown
North Sumatra: 283 deaths have been confirmed, with fatalities spread across Tapanuli Tengah, Tapanuli Selatan, Sibolga City, Tapanuli Utara, Humbang Hasundutan, Pakpak Barat, Padang Sidempuan City, Deli Serdang, and Nias.
Aceh: 151 people have died, with 75 still missing. Affected areas include Bener Meriah, Aceh Tengah, Pidie Jaya, Bireuen, Aceh Tenggara, Aceh Utara, Aceh Timur, Lhokseumawe, Gayo Lues, Subulussalam, and Nagan Raya. The province has seen 62,000 households displaced.
West Sumatra: The province reports 129 fatalities, 118 missing, and 16 injured. Affected areas include Agam Regency, Padang Panjang City, Padang City, Padang Pariaman, Tanah Datar, Pasaman Barat, Pasaman, Solok, Solok City, and Pesisir Selatan. Evacuees total 11,820 households (77,918 individuals), concentrated mainly in Padang City and Pesisir Selatan Regency.
Calls for National Disaster Declaration
Civil society groups in Aceh are urging President Prabowo Subianto to declare the floods and landslides a national disaster emergency, citing the local government’s inability to manage the crisis alone.
“We urge the President to immediately declare a national disaster emergency status due to the major disaster that has struck Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra,” said Alfian, Coordinator of the Aceh Transparency Society (MaTA), in Banda Aceh on Sunday, November 30, 2025, as reported by Antara.
