Four Banknote Denominations and Where to Exchange Them

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - According to Bank Indonesia’s Board of Directors Decision Letter No. 24/105/KEP/DIR dated March 31, 1992, four banknote denominations issued in 1979, 1980, and 1982 are nearing the end of their 10-year redemption period.

The public who hold any of these banknotes can exchange them at any commercial bank or BI office across Indonesia no later than April 30, 2025. After this date, the banknotes will no longer be eligible for exchange.

Specifically, the four banknote denominations withdrawn are:

1. The Rp10,000 issued in 1979

• Date of withdrawal: May 1, 1992.
• Time of withdrawal: April 30, 2025.
• Time and place of redemption at BI Head Office: April 30, 2025.
• Time and place of redemption at BI representative offices in the country: April 30, 1995.
• Physical characteristics: image of Javanese gamelan.

2. The Rp5,000 issued in 1980

• Date of withdrawal: May 1, 1992.
• Time of withdrawal: April 30, 2025.
• Time and place of redemption at BI Head Office: April 30, 2025.
• Time and place of redemption at BI representative offices in the country: April 30, 1995.
• Physical characteristics: image of a diamond sharpener.

3. The Rp1,000 issued in 1980

• Date of withdrawal: May 1, 1992.
• Time of withdrawal: April 30, 2025.
• Time and place of redemption at BI Head Office: April 30, 2025. 
• Time and place of redemption at BI representative offices in the country: April 30, 1995.
• Physical characteristics: image of Dr.Sutomo with Sultan Hasanuddin watermark.

4. The Rp500 issued in 1982

• Date of withdrawal: May 1, 1992.
• Time of withdrawal: April 30, 2025.
• Time and place of redemption at BI Head Office: April 30, 2025. 
• Time and place of redemption at BI representative offices in the country: April 30, 1995.
• Physical characteristics: image of titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum) with Achmad Yani General watermark.

Following Bank Indonesia Regulation Number 21/10/PBI/2019, replacement for Rupiah currency in a shabby, defective, or damaged condition must adhere to the following provisions:

1. If the physical metal Rupiah coin is more than half (½) of its original size and its authenticity can still be verified based on its characteristics, it will be replaced at full nominal value.
2. If the physical metal Rupiah coin is equal to or less than half (½) of its original size, no replacement will be provided.
