Former Police Chief Warns: SMAN 72 Blast Poses Greater Threat Than Terrorism

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Indonesian Police Chief, Da'i Bachtiar, also comments on the explosion incident at school, SMAN 72 Jakarta, allegedly carried out by a 17-year-old teenager. Da'i believes that the motive behind the incident on November 7, 2025, poses a greater potential danger than the threat of terrorist networks.

Da'i explains that terrorist networks usually have motives and patterns that the state's special anti-terror team can predict. Meanwhile, the motives behind children's acts of vandalism and terrorism can be more diverse and tend to be difficult to read.

"If our own children are the ones bombing, who have no clear motivation, and this can happen anywhere and at any time, that is the most dangerous," Da'i told journalists at Hotel Bidakara, Jakarta, on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.

He believes that it is not difficult for law enforcement to detect and trace a terrorist group that threatens the country. The special anti-terrorism team can also uncover their goals and even dismantle the network to stop future threats. Meanwhile, incidents like the one at SMAN 72 Jakarta will occur elsewhere if they cannot be detected among the children's surroundings.

Da'i said that the government and law enforcement should not be complacent in anticipating acts of terrorism. Although in recent years, there have been no terrorist incidents in Indonesia.

As for concrete steps that can be taken, he suggested promoting education starting from home. This education must continue at the community level, focusing on children's growth and development. "It can be in the community, at school, and in social environments as well," he said.

The explosion at SMAN 72 Jakarta occurred while students and teachers were performing Friday prayers on November 7, 2025. The explosion occurred twice. The first explosion was inside the third-floor prayer room. Then, followed by a second explosion a few minutes later behind the cafeteria.

When the police visited the crime scene, they found a toy gun. The gun had the names of perpetrators of mosque shootings in various countries inscribed on it.

Based on the analysis of the explosive materials at the crime scene conducted by the Mobile Brigade Unit of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, the student suspected of being the perpetrator planted seven bombs in the school. Four of them had exploded, while the other three were still active when discovered.

"We can conclude that a total of seven bombs were found at the crime scene," said Commander of the Jakarta Metro Police Mobile Brigade Unit Senior Commissioner Henik Maryanto during a press conference at the South Jakarta Jakarta Metro Police Headquarters on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.
