Elon Musk Says He's 'Disappointed' with Trump's Domestic Policy Bill

1 day ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Elon Musk admitted he was 'disappointed' by expenses incurred for the domestic policy bill passed by the Republicans in the House last week. This bill was heavily backed by President Donald Trump.

In an interview with CBS on the program CBS Sunday Morning, Elon Musk mentioned his reason for resigning as the Head of the Government Efficiency Department, or DOGE. "I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decreases it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing," Musk said.

Musk's comments put him at odds with Trump, who has been advocating for a massive spending package. The bill - which still needs to be approved by the Senate - will extend the tax cuts of 2017, a hallmark of Trump.

In addition, border security spending will increase, work requirements for Medicaid will be implemented, and clean energy tax credits will be repealed.

The tax provisions in the package, named the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," will increase the deficit by $3.8 trillion in 2034, according to the Congressional Budget Office. "I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful," Musk told CBS News, "but I don't know if it can be both. My personal opinion."

Musk was almost always present in the early months of the Trump administration. DOGE staff under Musk combed through almost every government agency for massive cutbacks. These savings raised concerns from Democrats and even some of Trump's allies, as well as various legal challenges.

Elon Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and the social media platform X, said that he would soon end his involvement in the government.

After resigning from DOGE, Elon Musk affirmed that he would focus on managing his businesses again. However, he will remain one of the most influential external advisors to President Trump.

In an interview with Ars Technica, he admitted that he had spent too much time on politics. However, he clarified. "It's not like I left the companies," he said. He argued that the media had exaggerated his political involvement.
