TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is urging countries around the world to swiftly transition to clean energy with justice. UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell argues that a fair transition from fossil fuels to clean energy will help address the current climate crisis.
In a written statement, Stiell stated that there is no more reason for many countries in the world to delay their commitment to the Paris Agreement by switching to clean energy. "We have agreed that we will transition from fossil fuels. Now is the time to focus on doing it fairly and orderly," said Stiell in his speech at the opening of COP30 in Belem, Brazil, on November 10, 2025.
Stiell exemplifies the impact of transitioning from fossil energy to clean energy on the economy. According to him, clean electricity usage is able to create new job opportunities. Moreover, solar and wind energy have become the lowest-cost energy sources. Furthermore, clean energy investments and infrastructure have surpassed fossil fuels by two to one.
"When climate disasters claim the lives of millions of people while we already have the solutions, this will never be forgiven. The economy of this transition is as undeniable as the cost of indifference," said Stiell.
In the same vein, Greenpeace Indonesia Country Director Leonard Simanjuntak mentioned that the world has agreed not to allow the expansion of fossil energy. However, many countries in the world still use energy from natural gas and coal. He believes that this is tantamount to denying that spirit.
Leonard stated that Indonesia is one of the countries that deny the promise to transition to clean energy. He assessed that Indonesia's energy transition policy is not built on an awareness that climate crises and disasters are already threatening humanity, but is more based on transactional politics that accommodate oligarchic interests.
Quoting the statements of President Prabowo Subianto in several global meetings, expressing the commitment to transform Indonesia towards 100 percent clean energy in the next decade, Executive Director of Cerah Agung, Budiono, stated that the statement must be concretely translated into all national energy policies. "However, the facts show that the direction of clean energy transition policies is still contradictory," said Agung in a written statement.
Agung revealed several documents, including Government Regulation Number 40 of 2025 concerning the National Energy Policy (KEN), PLN's General Electricity Supply Plan 2025-2034, and the National Electricity General Plan 2025-2045, still placing coal and gas as the main sources of national energy supply by more than 60 percent in the next two decades. 'If there is no comprehensive correction, then President Prabowo's political statement will only stop as rhetoric without a real policy foundation,' he said.
Agung believes that Indonesia's commitment on the global stage such as COP30, expressed through the Second Nationally Determined Contribution (SNDC) and the Net Zero Emission target of 2060 or earlier, requires the courage to carry out energy policy reforms.
According to him, the government must ensure that the national energy transition roadmap truly favors clean and just renewable energy. Without alignment between international commitments and domestic policies, Indonesia risks losing credibility in the eyes of the world.
