TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - China said it would fight to the end against the threat posed by U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump threatened to impose a 50 percent import tariff on Chinese products unless they reverse their decision to impose a 34 percent tariff on U.S. products.
China's Ministry of Commerce stated it strongly opposes Trump's threat and pledged to take retaliatory measures to protect its rights and interests. The comment came after Trump said he would impose an additional 50 percent duty on U.S. imports from China on Wednesday if Beijing does not lift the 34 percent tariff imposed on American products last week.
As reported by CNBC, China's Ministry of Commerce said the U.S. threat to raise tariffs on China is a very serious mistake. China will fight to the end if the U.S. insists on its way, the ministry added.
Last Friday, China's Ministry of Finance announced an additional 34 percent tariff on all goods imported from the U.S., starting on April 10. This increase in import tariffs was in response to Trump imposing a new 34 percent levy on China.
Two previous rounds of comprehensive tariffs, ranging from 10 to 15 percent, mostly targeting agricultural and energy products imported from the U.S.
In a post on his platform, Truth Social, Trump said that any country that retaliates against the U.S. by imposing additional tariffs will be met with new tariffs. Even higher than those already imposed.
As reported by CBS News and USA Today, the comments from the Republican Party's President were posted on Monday, April 7, 2025, U.S. time. He said the U.S. will impose an additional 50 percent tariff on China, effective on April 9, if China does not withdraw the 34 percent increase above the long-term trade violations they have committed by tomorrow, April 8, 2025.
As is known, on April 2, 2025, Trump announced that the U.S. would impose a 10 percent import tariff on products from all countries entering America, effective April 5, 2025.
The U.S. also provided an additional tariff known as a reciprocal tariff for countries that have a trade surplus with the U.S., while the U.S. has a deficit with those countries. Reciprocal tariffs will take effect on April 9, 2025.
Trump's Import Tariffs Weapon to Press China
China's ASEAN mission responded to the United States' policy of imposing import tariffs on its trading partners, including China. China asked the U.S. to stop using tariffs as a weapon to economically pressure China and infringe on the legitimate development rights of the Chinese people.
In an official statement on Saturday, April 5, 2025, China's ASEAN Mission said pressing and threatening are not the right ways to deal with China. They do not provoke problems, nor are they intimidated by the U.S.
The Chinese government regretted Trump's policy. China believes that both countries should be able to work well together.
The government stated that the China-U.S. economic relationship should be mutually beneficial and win-win.
China argues that U.S. policy should align with the common aspirations of the people of both countries and the world community. China also believes that the U.S. should pay attention to the fundamental interests of both countries.
