China Records $73.8 Billion Import to Indonesia, Up 16.51 Percent in 2024

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's imports last year increased by 5.42 percent to US$ 235.2 billion. Meanwhile, the import value in 2023 reached US$ 221.9 billion. China remains the largest importing country last year with a value of US$ 73.8 billion.

"Total oil and gas imports last year reached US$ 36.28 billion and non-oil and gas US$ 198.9 billion," as stated in the 2024 Foreign Trade Statistics for Indonesia's Imports published by the Central Statistics Agency on Monday, July 7, 2025.

China's share of imports to Indonesia reached 31.4 percent. Besides China, other main importing countries to Indonesia include Singapore with US$ 21.5 billion (9.16 percent) and Japan with US$ 14.98 billion (6.37 percent).

Throughout 2024, China recorded import value of US$ 73.8 billion and a volume of 42.7 million tons. Compared to the previous year, China's import value increased by 16.51 percent (US$ 10.5 billion). Similarly, the volume increased by 19.25 percent or 6.9 million tons.

Imports from China were dominated by machinery/mechanical equipment and parts worth US$17.5 billion, up by 17.47 percent from the previous year. The second largest import was electrical machinery/equipment and parts, which also increased by 7.48 percent (US$ 1 billion) to US$ 14.6 billion.

Iron and steel became the third largest commodity with a value of US$ 3.7 billion, up by 19.05 percent. The next largest position was occupied by plastic and plastic goods at US$ 3.6 billion (up by 27.35 percent) and vehicles and parts worth US$3.2 billion, up by 57.53 percent.

Indonesia's imports during 2023-2024 came from the top ten main source countries, namely China, Singapore, Japan, the United States, Malaysia, Australia, Thailand, South Korea, Vietnam, and India.

The import value from these ten countries in 2024 increased by US$ 12.3 billion or 7.59 percent compared to the previous year. In terms of their contribution to Indonesia's total imports, the import value from these ten countries reached 72.91 percent in 2023 and increased to 74.41 percent in 2024.
