TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of State for International Development of Canada, Y.M. Randeep Sarai, reaffirmed the commitment as a partner of Indonesia by announcing new funding of CAD$22.6 million (approximately Rp266.4 billion) for five new initiatives in Indonesia.
"These initiatives focus on supporting small businesses and promoting trade, promoting climate resilience through initiatives with youth and women's organizations, and protecting the health of mothers and newborns by improving training for midwives," said Randeep Sarai in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Sarai conveyed this at a press conference after completing his visit to Indonesia on January 9-13, 2026, to deepen cooperation between Indonesia and Canada.
The first initiative aims to promote climate-resilient agricultural food trade, providing support worth CAD $5 million (approximately Rp60.5 billion) over six years. This fund is intended to support the growth of MSMEs in the processed food sector, with a focus on women- and underrepresented-led businesses.
The second initiative is economic integration to increase value, trade, and exports worth CAD$5 million (approximately Rp60.5 billion) over six years, to support 400 MSMEs in Indonesia. The focus is on improving the export readiness and competitiveness of women-led MSMEs through capacity building.
The third initiative aims to support youth networks for sustainable gender and climate action worth CAD$4.1 million (approximately Rp49.6 billion) over four years. The goal is to support youth and women's organizations that work to advance women's rights and strengthen the climate and economic resilience of vulnerable communities.
As for the fourth initiative, it aims to support women leading climate action worth CAD$3.9 million (approximately Rp47.2 billion) over four years. This is to strengthen women's leadership in climate mitigation and adaptation and advance gender-responsive climate governance.
Lastly, funding is provided to support the Indonesia-Canada midwifery partnership worth CAD$4.6 million (approximately Rp55.7 billion) over three years, to strengthen the regulatory framework and accountability across midwifery training institutions to improve the quality and professionalism of midwifery services.
Sarai also stated that Canada is committed to providing CAD$25 million (approximately Rp303.6 billion) to support Indonesia with technical assistance and capacity building to help implement the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between Indonesia and Canada.
When asked how the funding will assist the implementation of the Indonesia-Canada CEPA, Sarai answered that the funding will be used for technical assistance.
"My assumption is to integrate the free trade agreement into the Indonesian economy and market. So, all the regulators, tax authorities, and others. So, this is for technical assistance and related matters," said Sarai.
Additionally, Sarai mentioned that Canada has allocated CAD$4.2 million for ASEAN initiatives, including agricultural standards, responsible AI governance, digital economy, and energy transition.
He revealed that the projects conducted have a regional ASEAN-wide nature, and for Indonesia, they have support promotion programs.
