TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Pope Francis passed away on Monday, April 21, 2025, at his residence in Casa Santa Marta, Vatican. At 09.45, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, announced the passing of 88-year-old Pope Francis from Casa Santa Marta.
"Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church," said Cardinal Farrell as quoted from the Vatican's website on Monday, April 21, 2025.
Pope Francis passed away after returning from the hospital. He was treated at Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital on Friday, February 14, 2025, after suffering from bronchitis for several days.
Pope Francis' clinical condition gradually deteriorated. Doctors diagnosed Pope Francis with bilateral pneumonia on Tuesday, February 18, 2025. After 38 days in the hospital, the late Pope returned to his residence in the Vatican at Casa Santa Marta for recovery.
In 1957, in his early 20s, Pope Jorge Mario Bergoglio, his original name, underwent surgery in his home country of Argentina to remove part of his lungs infected with severe respiratory illness. As he grew older, Pope Francis often suffered from respiratory problems. He even canceled plans to visit the United Arab Emirates in November 2023 due to influenza and pneumonia.
In April 2024, the late Pope Francis approved the latest edition of the papal funeral liturgy book, which will preside at the funeral mass, which has not yet been announced. The second edition of the Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis introduced several new elements, including how the Pope's body will be handled after death.
The determination of death is conducted in the chapel, not in the room where he died. His body is immediately placed in a coffin.

In this year's Easter message, the Pope described the situation in Gaza as dramatic and distressing. He condemned the alarming rise in anti-Semitism worldwide and urged Hamas to release the remaining hostages soon.
"I express my closeness to the suffering of the people of Israel and Palestine," he said, as quoted from Channel News Asia. "I urge all parties in conflict to stop the war, free the hostages, and help the starving people for a peaceful future."
In addition to delivering the Easter message, Pope Francis briefly met with U.S. Vice President JD Vance at the Vatican. The brief meeting lasted only a few minutes to exchange Easter greetings.
