TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that in the upcoming week, March 16 to 22, 2023, the atmospheric dynamics will continue to support an increase in water vapor supply and convective cloud growth in some parts of West Java. Supporting factors include the relatively warm sea surface temperatures around Indonesian waters.
According to the weather forecaster from the BMKG Climatology Station in West Java, Retno Kartika, there is a potential for wind convergence and wind shear in the vicinity of West Java as well as atmospheric instability categorized as mild to strong. "All of these factors support the increased potential for the formation of convective clouds on a local scale in the West Java region," she said in a written statement on Sunday, 15 March 2026.
Moderate to very heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds, is expected to occur locally and briefly. On Monday and Tuesday, March 16-17, these conditions are likely to occur in the eastern regions of West Java, such as Majalengka, Kuningan, Garut, Tasikmalaya, Ciamis, and Banjar City. While on Wednesday, these conditions are likely to occur in the Subang, Cirebon, Indramayu, and Kuningan areas.
Then, moderate to very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds on Friday, 20 March, is expected to occur in Sumedang, Subang, Cirebon, Indramayu, Majalengka, Kuningan, Garut, Tasikmalaya, and Ciamis. While on Saturday, these conditions are likely to occur in Cirebon, Indramayu, Majalengka, Kuningan, Garut, Tasikmalaya, and Ciamis.
During the previous week, some areas in West Java experienced increased rainfall activity influenced by several factors, namely the warm sea surface temperatures in Indonesian waters, thus increasing the water vapor supply. Atmospheric MJO waves in the vicinity of the West Java region, supported by air humidity, and atmospheric instability categorized as mild to strong, all support the increased potential for the formation of convective clouds on a local scale in the West Java region.
Based on the monitoring of rainfall in the past week, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall was recorded in some parts of West Java, namely in Bogor, Bekasi, Depok City, Karawang, Cianjur, Purwakarta, Subang, Bandung Regency, Sukabumi, Sumedang, Indramayu, Majalengka, Cirebon, Kuningan, Tasikmalaya, and Ciamis.
