Bali Reports No Confirmed Zika Cases Despite US CDC Travel Health Notice

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Bali Health Agency (Dinkes Bali) of Indonesia stated that, based on routine regional surveillance data, the Zika virus has not yet spread to the province.

"Based on routine surveillance data from regency/city health agencies and hospitals across Bali, no confirmed cases of Zika have been found in the province to date," said the Head of the Bali Health Agency, I Nyoman Gede Anom, in Denpasar on Monday, August 24, 2026.

Anom issued this official statement in response to reports regarding a Level 2 Travel Health Notice from the US CDC concerning a surge in Zika cases, one of which involved a traveler who had recently returned from Bali.

He emphasized that the Bali Health Agency, together with the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), appreciates the global early warning system and is using it as a basis for evaluation.

Zika virus disease is transmitted through the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the same vector responsible for Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF).

The disease has an incubation period of 3–14 days, with symptoms that tend to be milder than those of DHF—such as rash, fever, red eyes, muscle pain, joint pain, fatigue, and headaches lasting 4–7 days—though it is confirmed that no such cases have occurred in Bali.

Nevertheless, he noted, the Bali Health Agency continues to urge the public, as well as domestic and international tourists, to practice Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS) and maintain environmental cleanliness.

Prevention efforts focus on the "3M Plus" campaign—draining water containers, covering them, and recycling/reusing items—as well as using mosquito repellent lotions or other repellents and bed nets to prevent bites from Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, the primary vector for the Zika virus.

"If anyone experiences the symptoms mentioned above, they should immediately seek medical attention at the nearest health facility," Anom said.

As a proactive measure, the Ministry of Health and the Bali Health Agency are increasing vigilance by strengthening laboratory capacity and surveillance networks (Surveilabs). This strategic move encompasses increasing PCR and serology testing capacity at regional and national reference laboratories, enhancing vigilance at points of entry through health quarantine measures, and intensifying symptom monitoring at community health centers and hospitals.
