Bali Issues Joint Call as Eid Takbiran and Nyepi Coincide

5 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Bali Interfaith Harmony Forum has issued a joint call ahead of the Nyepi and Eid al-Fitr celebrations, as the two major religious holidays are potentially set to coincide. The Hindu Day of Silence falls on March 19, 2026, while Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijri is potentially scheduled for the following day.

Chairperson of the Bali Ulema Council, KH Mahrusun Hadyono, confirmed the call. "For the Muslim community, takbiran is allowed, but with certain regulations," he stated on Saturday, February 28, 2026.

These regulations include allowing takbiran to be conducted in the nearest mosque or musala alongside local residents. Participants are also only permitted to walk to their places of worship.

Furthermore, takbiran (recitation of praise to God) is requested to be performed without the use of amplifiers, firecrackers, or other loud noises, and with minimal lighting. "It can be held from 6:00 p.m. WITA (Central Indonesian Time) to 9:00 p.m. WITA," he noted during the MUI Bali Conference in Denpasar.

The security and order of the takbiran implementation are the responsibility of each mosque or musala management, which must coordinate with local security forces.

In addition to regulating takbiran, the Bali Interfaith Harmony Forum has, as in previous years, mandated that all ground, sea, and air transportation services cease operations during the implementation of Catur Brata Penyepian. This restriction is in effect from Thursday, March 19, 2026, at 6:00 a.m. WITA until Friday, March 20, 2026, at 6:00 a.m. WITA.

Furthermore, radio and television broadcasting institutions are not permitted to broadcast during the Day of Silence. Similarly, mobile telecommunication service providers are required to deactivate mobile data services, and all TV broadcasting services are prohibited from distributing content during Nyepi as scheduled, while still maintaining emergency communication services.

The Bali Interfaith Harmony Forum also stipulates that all citizens and tourists are prohibited from traveling or leaving their homes, lighting firecrackers, using amplifiers, making loud noises, utilizing excessive lighting, or engaging in any other activities that may disrupt the sanctity of Nyepi and public order.

Accommodation businesses, entertainment services, and tourist destination management in Bali are not permitted to promote business activities using branding or commercial activities associated with the Day of Silence.

The call from the Bali Interfaith Harmony Forum was signed by its Chairperson, Ida Pengelingsir Agung Putra Sukahet, and the Head of the Bali Regional Office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Dr. H. Gusti Made Sunartha. It was also signed by Bali Regional Police Chief, Inspector General Daniel Adityajaya; Commander of the 163/Wira Satya Military Resort, Brigadier General TNI Ida I Dewa Agung Hadisaputra; and Bali Governor Wayan Koster.
