TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Apple company is reportedly facing a supply chain crisis involving a key component in chip manufacturing. This situation is occurring because the development of the artificial intelligence (AI) industry has triggered a shortage of glass cloth, a material vital for the production of advanced electronic devices.
The component shortage is expected to persist until the second half of 2027. However, according to a Nikkei Asia report, quoted by 9to5Mac on Tuesday, January 13, 2025, the Cupertino-based company is working hard to address this material shortage.
Apple is known to be one of the first companies to adopt glass cloth fiber as part of the iPhone chip substrate. This material was chosen for its dimensional stability, stiffness, and ability to facilitate high-speed data transmission. Due to these component advantages, many chip companies have switched to glass cloth fiber, triggering the current shortage.
A number of companies reportedly switching to glass cloth fiber include Nvidia, Google, and Amazon. This supply pressure has forced Apple to send its staff directly to Japan to secure stock. However, these efforts have not yielded significant results due to limited factory production capacity.
As a mitigation measure, Apple will develop alternative sources, including sending employees to a small Chinese fiberglass manufacturer called Grace Fabric Technology (GFT). Apple has also enlisted the help of Mitsubishi Gas Chemical to oversee the quality improvement of its Chinese material supplier.
