Anxious Hopes in the Used-Car Market

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Since January 2026, Mohammad Nur Hakim, 39, has visited several used-car centers in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta. But his plan to replace his 2013 minibus with a newer model has been delayed. "I'm looking for a 2023 model, but I haven't found the right one yet," said the Tangerang resident in Banten on Monday, March 2, 2026. Hakim hopes that when he returns to his hometown in Central Java during the upcoming Idul Fitri holiday, his family will be able to travel in a newer car.

The car Hakim is searching for is not unavailable. The problem is that prices remain above Rp200 million (about US$12,000). "I'm trying to look for an older one, maybe a 2020 model, so it fits my budget," he said. In the market, the price of a three-year-old seven-seat minibus, such as a 2020-2023 Toyota Avanza, still ranges around Rp200 million, about Rp40-50 million (US$2,400-3,000) cheaper than the newest model.

Ferry, owner of the used-car shop F Mobil at the TEMS Used Car Exchange in ITC Permata Hijau, South Jakarta, explained that the still-high prices of used cars less than three years old lead consumers lately to choose vehicles older than five years. "The ones that really sell well are those over five years old, because their prices are below Rp200 million," Ferry said at his stall on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

Recently, the used-car market appears livelier than the new-car market. The reason is not only the seasonal surge ahead of the Idul Fitri holiday, when many people search for vehicles. Dealers suspect that the new-car market is still waiting for clarity on incentive policies. "If there are no incentives, consumers may turn again to used cars because they are relatively more affordable," Ferry said.
