TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Airlangga University (Unair) in Surabaya, East Java, ranked 276th in the world in the 2027 Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings (QS WUR), placing it third in Indonesia thanks to its ongoing institutional transformation.
"This is not just a number or a position in a ranking. This is the result of a long journey, hard work, commitment, and collaboration of the entire Unair academic community in building an increasingly superior and globally competitive institution," Unair Rector Prof. Muhammad Madyan said on campus on Thursday, June 18.
Madyan stated that this achievement is the fruit of a consistent quality improvement process carried out by the entire Unair academic community across the fields of education, research, innovation, and institutional governance.
Madyan explained that several indicators in the ranking showed significant improvements, particularly the International Research Network (IRN) indicator, which climbed from second to first place in Indonesia.
"Various cross-border research collaborations, joint publications, joint supervision, visiting professorships, and various forms of global academic partnerships have significantly contributed to strengthening Unair's position internationally," he said.
Furthermore, the International Faculty (IF) indicator also recorded a rise in scores and standing, lifting Unair's national ranking from fourth to third in Indonesia.
"The presence of lecturers and researchers from various countries not only enriches the campus academic atmosphere, but also improves the quality of learning, strengthens the research and publication ecosystem, and expands the global scientific network for our students and lecturers," Madyan said.
In the Faculty Student Ratio (FSR) indicator, Unair improved its score and world ranking while maintaining its position as the second-highest in Indonesia.
Meanwhile, the Academic Reputation indicator also improved, demonstrating the growing recognition of Unair's quality by the international academic community.
According to Madyan, these rankings reflect the quality and impact Unair has achieved, but they are not the ultimate goal of institutional development.
"Unair will continue to strengthen the campus' internationalization, expand its global research network, improve the quality of education and academic reputation, and build institutional governance that is increasingly adaptive, innovative, and data-driven," he said.
Going forward, Unair will remain focused on producing quality education, impactful research, beneficial innovation, and graduates capable of contributing to national development and global society. "Let us use this achievement as new energy to continue working, collaborating, and innovating. To realize Unair, which will increasingly impact Indonesia and the world," Madyan concluded.
